Peter and Vandy > 500 Days of Summer

Apparently I am a fan of quirky indie love stories told out of order. I had forgotten that I wanted to see Peter and Vandy until I randomly saw it in Netflix’s Watch Instantly section. Watch Instantly? Don’t mind if I do!

I  (obviously) love 500 Days of Summer. I’ve mentioned the damn thing enough on this blog, haven’t I? Sure, it sometimes felt like it was trying too hard (downtown LA is NOT cool no matter what you say, everyone is super up to date on their hipster trivia, etc). I loved it anyway. But then I watched Peter and Vandy. And it’s so much better! You know how people say, “That’s the stuff!”? Well, that’s the stuff. Such good stuff! I mean, I got their relationship. I could see why they fell in love, why they continued to work out the kinks when things started to get messy. I could relate to the little mind games that they played, even the random (but not so random) blow-ups – when Peter called Vandy a fuckface for using two knives to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (which btw, she calls a PB&J and it drives Peter insane)? Died. laughing. Because sometimes you just have to call your lover/spouse a fuckface, am I right? *looks around*

In 500 Days, I didn’t quite understand what was SO GREAT about Summer, why Tom would even be interested in her and why she would be interested in him. I mean, besides their common love for The Smiths (who DOESN’T LOVE THE SMITHS?!). You see his heartbreak coming from a mile away, and you just want it over already. Summer paves the way for Autumn, and the whole movie falls into place. And  we’re supposed to sigh and say, “Everything happens for a reason!” But with Peter and Vandy, there is no clean resolution. They love each other but it’s messy and there’s the possibility that the relationship could go downhill (again). But you root for them, you want them to make it. It went much deeper than: Hey look! It’s the guy who falls in love, not the girl! Isn’t that just WACKY?!

P.S. It also doesn’t hurt that Jason Ritter is completely adorable.

Compiled random thoughts

Preggo brain is so intense that it sticks around for like a year after the fact. My ability to retain memory is shot. “Oh right!” is a constant refrain for me lately. I’ve also been thinking out loud a lot, which can make things awkward. More fun stuff: My hair has been falling out in handfuls at a time -almost forgot how fun this was last time! Our bathroom floor is always covered with it, no matter what I do. And these last ten pounds aren’t taking a fucking hike. Granted, I’ve slowed down my workout regimen (although I still try for 2-3 times a week). And I continue to eat sugar. It’s just so…GOOD. I’m back to my pre-pregnancy weight, so at least I’ve got that going for me.

But otherwise, life has been pretty good. Andy and I might be zombies but we’ve gotten pretty good at sleepwalking. It’s intense, but worth it. My boys are both changing so much lately, in these really amazing ways that make me want to pause everything for a moment, lest they grow up too fast. Mad is rolling over and scooting around and Zain is mimicking every.single.thing. that Andy and I say. You can imagine. And sometimes, he says other things, things that are completely his own thoughts. It’s cuckoo.Everything is big. That truck? BIG truck. The baby I’m holding? BIG baby!

*is distracted* What is up with the intense heat/chilling cold switcheroos round these parts?  I mean, choose one and go with it, Portland.

Um, what else?

Hey, this skirt is pretty:

I want to buy it and wear it with my current pair of favorite shoes:

Still haven’t seen 500 Days of Summer, but I will do my darndest to make that happen. Every screenshot I see makes me crave Zooey’s wardrobe. I’m especially drawn to the top (or is it a dress?) below. The “Love will tear us apart” shirt (I see what you did there) is also awesomesauce.

I’m starting a class the end of this month. It’s a short story workshop. I’m equal parts nervous and excited. I haven’t taken a class in almost 9 years (!), I hope I can get back on that bicycle and ride it into the sunset. Am I crazy for adding one more thing to my already heaping plate of responsibilities?

Andy, avert your eyes

Joseph. Gordon-Levitt. SRSLY.

Okay… couple things.

1.Love the clothes. Sweater vests, puffed sleeves, striped ties, summer dresses…super cute.

2. Who doesn’t love the Smiths???!!!

3. Did I mention JGL? (….Zooey’s okay too.)

4. I can’t stop watching the trailer.

Must see this movie.

The end.

Close runner up: Management. Although it looks like it only has one thing going for it. I’ll let you guess what that is.
